Unfortunately, when it comes down to long-term reliability, laptops are not on the same level as desktops, and that’s understandable because manufacturers have to fit a lot of power into a small frame. Another important thing we should point out is the fact that laptop computers are sometimes subjected to a series of events that could lead to a system freeze, chokes, and even complete shutdown. This is due to CPU throttling, therefore, if you want to keep track of what’s going on, you’ll need a software that is capable of tracking the three main types of CPU throttling that are present on your computer.

Monitor & disable CPU throttling using ThrottleStop

To do this, we’re going to use a tool known as ThrottleStop to see if it’s worth your time. We’ve heard good things about this piece of software, so now it’s time to put it to the test.

OK, so downloading ThrottleStop is very simple due to its small size. Not to mention, it’s a portable tool, which means, there’s no need to install. Just extract it from the ZIP file and launch away.

As you can see, the default is Performance, but if you are planning to play video games, you can simply select the one that says Games, or if the idea is to primarily use the web for the day, select the option that says Internet. There are other options below as you can tell from the image. If your CPU supports Turbo, then you can disable this with just a click of a button. Furthermore, folks can view the temperature of their CPU among other important things. Bear in mind that each time you make a change, you’ll be required to click on Save at the bottom to get your new settings into action.

If you want, you can change the profile names. For example, if you want to change the word Performance to Stupid Fast, then that’s entirely possible. The ability is also there to change the colors of the Notification Area Icons. You can download it from here. TIP: Counter Control helps you monitor performance counters on Intel processors.
